A Marine Chief Engineer is an important member of the onboard crew, in charge of overseeing the entire Marine Engineering Department and maintaining and operating all engineering equipment onboard the vessel.
A Marine Chief Engineer’s job as a licenced mariner is of high rank onboard the ship, and in some cases, he shares equal rank with the Captain. The duties are frequently divided between these two positions, with the Marine Chief Engineer in charge of all machinery and onboard maintenance. The Marine Chief Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the engine room is ready for inspection by coastguard authorities and that there is a sufficient supply of fuel and spare parts.
